Jersey City Medical Center Attracts
Student Mural from Magnet School
JERSEY CITY - Jersey City Medical Center’s (JCMC) Anesthesiology Department will become home to an original piece of art created by three students from the Jersey City Arts High School Program. The work of art will be presented to Dr. Jeff Smok, Vice President and Anesthesiology Department Chair on Monday, April 7 at 11 am at JCMC, 355 Grand St., Jersey City.
Dr. Smok made an “Arc Angel” donation to the school’s “The Tour of the Masters” program. As a result of the donation, one of the upperclassmen in the program will be able to travel to London and take part in a tour of art museums and live theater.
"I am very excited to be the recipient of such a lovely piece of art. It is even more gratifying to know that this gesture will broaden the education of a student through art, theater and travel. Helping to educate the young minds of Jersey City is both personally rewarding and beneficial to the community,” said Dr. Smok.
In acknowledgment of Dr. Smok’s patronage, three students created a 4x8 original mural of a sleeping Statue of Liberty laying in a meadow surrounded by sheep and an anesthesiologist. Magnet school sophomores Sebastian Tomkowski, Fatoumata Camara and Raeef Hana took about 30 hours to finalize the mural. Camara came up with the idea and created the initial sketch of the piece.
All the art supplies used by the students to create this mural were donated by Dr. Smok. Art specialist Jessica Ward, a second-year instructor at the school, oversaw the project.
